The goal is to give you a general overview of basic Portuguese vocabulary along with a very brief introduction to Portuguese grammar.
Our introduction section has nine subsections of relevant vocabulary. Click on the buttons below to dive into each subsection, and scroll down further for general tips and reflections for Portuguese beginners. Our introduction recordings feature a female student from Catanduva, São Paulo!

You will learn quickly that each Brazilian speaks with a unique accent. However, there are particular intonations and pitches that are consistent. During your first few weeks in Brazil, listen carefully to the tone and intonation of specific words. Listening to music on the radio, and watching Brazilian Novelas or the daily news is a great way to start. Once your brain recognizes the meaning of different sounds (identifying accents, dropped vowels or consonants, etc.) you will find yourself with higher comprehension and speaking skills.
Most of your work will be in English. Your professional peers, your students, and other strangers who know English will want to practice speaking with you. It is your job to provide others with the opportunity to speak English. However, set an early precedent with yourself. When, where, and how are you going to practice? Are you going to find a team or club? Are you going to live with Brazilian roommates? Finding a consistent safe space to practice is instrumental to your success with the language.
Do not expect to be fluent in nine months, especially if you don't have prior experience with Portuguese. Portuguese is a challenging language, and it takes bravery to learn any language. Be kind to yourself, laugh at yourself, and JUST SPEAK! It is important to dedicate yourself to learning the language, and locals generally appreciate your effort. Trust us, if you make a mistake or a dirty hand gesture by accident, your friends will tell you.
