Ready to further test your food knowledge?

Whether it's feijoada, farofa, acaí or quiejo coalho, there are many foods unique to Brazil. Try your best to be brave and open to Brazilian cuisine. It can be fun to try cooking Brazilian foods at home (a special skill to bring back home!), and inviting friends over dinner can be a great way to learn more about the culture and history of Brazil. Food is culture!

You might eat something that your body quickly rejects. Tudo vai dar certo! It is common to struggle during the first few weeks (or months) with foods sitting uncomfortably. If you are in the N or NE region, you may also struggle with dehydration. The intense heat can make you feel sluggish. Feel hungry or sick? Drink a bottle of water first. Most importantly, if something consistently makes you feel yucky, stop eating it! People will understand.

Some apartments or houses won't have an oven or multiple stove-tops. If that's a priority for you, choose your housing carefully. However, don't be scared to change your cooking style and schedule. If a grocery store doesn't have what you want, look for a kitanda or small fruit/vegetable stand. For fresh produce, Saturday markets may be your best option.
