Generally, taxis in Brazil are significantly more expensive than Uber. When available, Uber is safe, relatively cheap, and a great resource. That being said, some smaller cities in the interior are unlikely to have Uber, making taxis the only option. When using Uber, make sure to watch the driver END the trip; some drivers may continue the trip to overcharge you.
Like the United States (and unlike Europe), air travel around Brazil is limited to about 3-4 national airlines and can be quite pricey if not booked in advance...so, book in advance whenever you can! The steep airfare between cities may tempt you to look into overnight buses, but keep in might that long-distance buses are occasionally the same price as a plane ticket. Passenger trains exist in some places, but are quite uncommon in Brazil.
Look...as much planning as you put into your route from your home to the university or the bus connections from one rodoviária to another, you're likely to come up against some kind of roadblock along the way (pun kind of intended). Whether it's unexpected weather, a worker strike, or heavy traffic, keep in mind that your travel plans may not always go as you imagined. Try your best to be flexible and roll with any punches. You'll get there eventually. :)
